Chapitre 1. Kolonizasyon ak Ekoloji Sosyal : Konsekans Fizyolojik, Sikolojik, ak Enfliyans yo sou Lasante

Travay demolisyon an lage kolonize yo nan kouri epi li pouse yo sou yon pant driverans san fen. Ansuit gen yon dechoukay kiltirèl ki vin kenbe kolonize yo anba frap tribò babò pou yo pa janm rive gen priz sou levye enstitisyonèl yo. Nan kondisyon sa a, espas sikolojik ak opòtinite ekonomik yo ap retresi chak jou pi plis, alòske presyon, kristè, ak izolman ap ogmante pi plis. Angrenaj kolonizasyon an pa sispann gen konsekans sou lavi moun jouk jounen jodi.

This paper draws from a theoretical model called INGAM (Madhère, Harrell, & Royal : 2009), and analyzes how the wave of colonization launched at the end of the fifteenth century triggered an enormous collective catastrophe on two continents. We will show how such a catastrophe destroyed the social ecology of these communities, i.e. all the arrangements that the targeted populations had made for harmonious living. The immediate result was massive forced displacement among the colonized people, which evolved into endless transiency over time. This was accompanied by a full-scale campaign of “cultural uprooting”, with relentless, multi-pronged [xxxi] assaults on the minds, so as to prevent members of the colonized community from ever getting any leverage on the social institutions. Under these conditions, more and more restrictions have been placed not only on economic opportunities, but also on “psychological space”, generating greater pressure, stress, and isolation. The mechanisms put in place during colonial times continue to have consequences on the lives of people today. We clearly delineate the pathways and the cascade of physiological and psychological reactions. The immune system, the hormonal system, the network for neuro-signals are all susceptible to repeatedly experience disturbances. On the basis of correlational studies, we can follow how such disturbances echo various psychological responses, from anxiety and depression to memory deficits. In the absence of support, the consequences would likely be deleterious to the health of the population both physically and mentally. In conclusion, we will show that this model can be useful to explain many other current events in our society.

Chapitre 2.

Based on a socio-historical analysis that privileges the historicity, uses and challenges of heritage and memory of potential slavery sites, as well as detailed empirical research (archives, observations, interviews, photographs, literature), this article proposes an original reflection on the traces and the historical experiences related to the colonial slavery conditions and their futures in Haiti. In analyzing the traces of the memory of slavery and the memorial stories staged in colonial dwellings, which later became places of potential memory, I shall try to understand how the inheritance of colonization and slavery and the regimes of historicity are at stake in post-colonial Haitian society, whether in terms of memorial constructions and heritage issues. How was the collective memory built in Haiti? My attachment to the crossed approach of the scales of analysis (individual and collective, spatial, temporal) corresponds to the emphasis on the transformation of spaces (historical evolution), social experience (discourses and practices of actors) the capacity (will, means, goal) of staging and representing the traces of the past.

Chapitre 3.

Nan lokalite Sabous komin Leyogàn ki chita nan depatman lwès peyi dAyiti yon pè savann, kidonk, yon chèf relijye nan kanton an twouve ap li nan yon liv ki parèt ansyen. Tit liv sa a apèn lizib: « Bouquet funèbre an faveur d’une personne morte ». Pandan li pa plimeyank, pè savann lan chante pou nou plizyè chan an laten. Lè n ap koute l chante, sans melodi yo sanble ak tradisyon chan gregoryen. N ap raple fòm chan sa yo te kreye sèlman pou yon kad relijye. Anviwonman mizikal la pat depase preskripsyon sakre Legliz katolik women te trase nan epòk la. Bon! N ap chache konprann fonksyon ak pataj tach relijye yo apati Kòd nwa (1685) la. Boutofen, kijan echanj sa yo tabli nan sosyete pòs kolonyal la yon konpòtman ke nou rele « mimetis kretyen ».

In the Sarbous locality of the town of Leogane from the Ouest department of Haiti, a pè savann, i.e. a village religious celebrant, little educated, was reading us an obviously old book titled Funeral bouquet for a dead person. From this collection of religious songs, he sang us several Latin songs, the melodic lines following the tradition of Gregorian chant to create a strictly religious musical type in line with the orthodoxy of the Roman Catholic Church. At the time, composers responded to liturgical needs of this Church. What are the existing links between this descendant of slaves in Saint-Domingue [xxxiv] with such cultural and religious expressions? In times of mourning, an additional atmosphere is required. Without mixing exclusively to africanism, judeo-christian liturgical practices thus coexist with voodoo rituals. Through the division of religious roles under the Code noir (Black code, 1685), how do develop some social and religious complexes within these communities related to what we call « christian mimicry »? And how do they manifest in the postcolonial social interactions?

Chapitre 4.

Travay mwen pwopoze a chita sou eritaj esklavaj la, espesyalman sou fason esklav nan plantasyon yo te degaje yo pou reziste. Objektif mwen, piske zòt pou bokou nan jan moun ye, jan moun parèt, idantite moun makònen ak lòt moun ki anfas nou nan sosyete a. Pou mwen, se eseye konprann epi eksplike ak entèprete dedoubleman an kaskad yon moun dwe opere pou soti nan klwazònman ak deklwazònman sijè/objè a.

While running away, the fugitive slave (maroon) engages materialistically his own survival, by subverting, undermining, destabilizing, disguising and masking. It is through this pluralistic register that I intend to decipher the paradigmatic manifestations of marronnage. My intention is to locate the continuities and discontinuities of this semiotic transformation while exploring the epistemic and social construct of the identity of the Subject who emerges from this: the Maroon. I intend to explore the theoretical links between History and Identity as they relate to the fabrication of this particular subject. Both collective and personal representations are determined by society (the Other). First, I take into account the ontological and phenomenological aspects of Being. The existence of the latter is in a permanent, yet fluctuating, dialogic relation with the Other, or by default, with the Self. Second, I offer an interpretative approach to extract a new perspective of a postmodern plural individual, not fractioned or binary. Within the same vein, I can correlate the emerging of this somewhat fractal identity, as an attempt to conjure the impact of Object/Me and Subject/I displacement; this will help in analyzing the phenomenological effects in deconstructing and achieving the exploration of the Self, into an individual who is One-multiple.

Chapitre 5.

Michel Philippe Lerebours pa wè eskilti tankou yon atizay ayisyen. Men galrida yo pat byen akeyi eskilti sa. Nap chache [xxxvii] konnen si kanpay kont vodou yo ak jefò pou plante relijyon kretyen yo ka di nou kichòy nan refleksyon nou.

The first Haitian art theorists all have neglected the volume-emphasizing art forms. Thus, for Malraux, Haïti stands as the only people of painters, while Michel Philippe Lerebours would lead us to believe that sculpture is not strictly speaking Haitian art. It must be admitted that from the colonial period and the nineteenth century did not emerge many sculptors’ names. One has to wait until the late 1940s to witness the first impulses towards a non-monumental sculpture, but which were oriented towards artisanal production, favored by the tourist development of the times. Since the early 2000s, a new trend in sculpture has appeared. It does not hesitate to make Vodou and the popular imagination the backdrop of its inspiration. However, very few galleries seem willing to exhibit the works, which makes it difficult to make it accessible on the local art market. This situation challenges us to explain the social reluctance to embrace sculpture when you consider it was the traditional art of sub-Saharan Africa from which originated the different tribes who were deported to the colony of Saint Domingue. It is of interest to explore to what extent evangelization and the various anti-superstition campaigns that the Vodou religion was subjected to can shed some light on this phenomenon.

Chapitre 6. Sikoloji afriken adan litérati afriken é afrokaribéyen

Ena Eluther

Kijan fè ou pé ka òksèvé kilti afromériken é afriken, siwvwè ou pa ka jété on zyé séryé asi nosyon a blèsman la? Nosyon -lasa fondal-fondal pou tout kèksyon alantou a Nèg an XXIyèm syèk-lasa. Listwa a Afriken yo chayé pa fòs Lézamérik, listwa a kolonizatè Léwòp ki mèt lanmen asi Lafrik, asiré-sèten, maké fon-fon-fon lèspri a pitit a Lafrik; malgré yo rézisté é yo kenbé fil a lavi, nanm a yo toujou ni mak a démounaj-la Léwòp òganizé la pou brizé-krazé ki lèspri ki kilti ki sistenm politik afriken la. Fò di osi, déklaré on sikoloji afriken ka ègzisté poubon, sé kontinyé asi chimen a on tradisyon litérè é téorik ki pa nèf. Litérati afrokaribéyen é afriken, sé akwèdi pòtré a pèp é kilti nèg; é i ka montré soufè Nèg soufè adan listwa. Dépi tan a okipasyon [xxxviii] a Lafrik pou yo té razyé Nèg, é tan a kal-a-bato-la, jis oti dominasyon néokolonyal a jòdijou, makè a Lafrik é Lézanmérik ka voyé monté tout boulvès pèp nèg ka parèt adan sé liv-la, vwè ki adan kilti a yo ki adan sosyété a yo. Siwvwè nou ka liyanné makè afriken é makè afrokaribéyen, sé davwa ladépòtasyon é lèstravay Afriken sibi, tou sa sé dé mòso a on menm balan a dominasyon lè Léwòp varé si Lafrik. Litérati afriken é afrokaribéyen ka fè-w dékouvè tout kèksyon ki alantou a pèp a Lafrik é dyaspora mériken a-y; i pé ka ba-w répons, i ka fè-w kalkilé, i ka fè-w vwè tini on pwenviz afriken poubon ki ka rézisté, é ki pé ban-nou zouti pou on « Rènésans afriken », ki Lafrik ki Lézanmérik.

Is it possible to take an interest in Afro-american and African cultures without examining the notion of trauma? This notion is, for sure, at the heart of the black question in this 21th century. The history of the mass deportation of Africans to the Americas, and of the colonisation of the African continent by the Europeans, has, no doubt, left deep marks in the African mind, in spite of the resistance and the resilience, and because of the European’s will to mentally, culturally and politically de-structure the African souls. Note that the affirmation of an African psyche is based on an old theoretical and literary tradition. Afro-Caribbean and African literature, which is a mirror of peoples and cultures, testify to the traumas caused by this painful history. Since the invasion of Africa for raiding men and women, since the middle passage, to the neo-colonial dominations, the writers of Africa and the Americas show the cultural and societal upheavals the peoples represented in the works lived. The association of African and Afro-Caribbean writers is not fortuitous: the deportation, and the Africans’ enslavement that came next, are an integral part of a wider movement of aggression towards Africa by Europe. A transnational and transcontinental look will highlight a [xl] community of sufferings, of wounds for the Africans who lived in Africa as much as for the Africans of the American diaspora. From the both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, we have to heal the ontological wound caused by this “Ambiguous adventure” during the late four centuries of African history. Nevertheless, the literary works prove that an African thought holds firm over the Atlantic as much as in Africa, in spite of the will to acculturate African peoples. The Afro-Caribbean and African novels constitute a real good field of investigation: both art and tool for knowing the world and mankind, the novel offers a rich cultural and historical panorama of the black world. Which are the “new” challenges to take up, in order to assure the continuity as well as the re-appropriation of the African mind by the largest number? African and Afro-Caribbean literature makes it possible to explore the questionings which worry the peoples of Africa and its American diaspora, offer responses and ask questions, and reveal the existence of an African worldview in resistance which is able to give us the means for an African rebirth here and there.

Chapitre 7.

Nou konprann vodou a tankou yon eritaj zansèt yo kite epi ki ka rapwoche eritye yo youn ak lòt, li enpòtan anpil paske li kenbe andedan li memwa batay kite mennen pou fini ak koze esklavaj la. Aprè gran fèt Ouidah 92 la ki te fèt nan peyi Benen (ak kèk lòt pwojè ki sanble) kite make yon gwo moman nan istwa komès ak memwa esklavaj, kouman atis yo rive pran ankont eritaj sila nan travay kreyasyon yo pandan ke yo rete konsyan de tout koze politik ak kiltirèl eritaj sila ka soulve? Ki langaj yo konte itilize ki ka pèmèt yo pran distans yon fason pou yo ka kontinye fè memwa sila ekziste? Èske vodou a pataka pou atis yo zouti ki pèmèt yo renouvle atachman yo youn ak lòt epi rive gade an fas pase amè sa?

This article aims to examine the treatment of memory of the transatlantic slave trade, slavery, and Vodou by contemporary Haitian and Beninese artists. Vodou is understood as an ancestral heritage (common territory). As a place of elaboration and preservation for the memory of the struggles against slavery, its importance is cardinal. How, since the Ouidah 92 festival (and other related projects), a true turning point in the historiography and memories of the transatlantic slave trade, are contemporary Haitian and Beninese artists appropriating this heritage in the act of creation while being aware of the political and cultural issues arising from it? Through what language do they challenge and call attention to this memory in order to allow it to survive today? For these artists, can Vodou be considered, the link or the knot of reconciliation, of renewal of this « dark past »?

Chapitre 8.

Inegalite sa yo manifeste nan jan sistèm edikatif yo òganize, nan matyè yo chwazi ansenye yo, nan ki jan yo seleksyone elèv yo, nan enpòtans yo bay lang fransè nan ansèyman/aprantisaj la epi nan objektif yo defini pou edikasyon an.

This paper deals with the link between Haitian and Burkinabe educational systems in relation to their colonial and slave past. It presents current educational reforms, specifically those undertaken under the competency-based approach, as an opportunity to break with the legacy of this past, a legacy that influences the perpetuation of the very social inequalities established in the colonies by choosing the organization and contents of teaching cycles, the criteria for selection, the bias for French as the language of teaching and learning and the objectives of education itself.

Chapitre 9. Ki non epistemoloji ayisyen an?

Judite Blanc

Nan chapit sa a mwen dabò defini konsèp epistemoloji a selon twa (3) tradisyon (anglosakson, frankofòn epi afriken). Epi mwen analize epistemoloji ayisyen an selon kritè teyori lakonesans afriken kote mwen fè konsiderasyon sou plas vodou ak tradisyon oral yo. Mwen fè gwo rale mennen vini sou kouran epistemoloji anpiris ak [xliii] rasyonalis ansanm ak rapò kouran sa yo ak epistemoloji ayisyen. Mwen reflechi tou sou enfliyans zansèt nou yo ki te fè revolisyon an 1791. Mwen konsidere yo kòm premye teyorisyen ak teyorisyèn pou mòd panse ki santre sou eritaj afriken nou (sa nou ka rele « afwosantrisite »), pou mòd panse antikolonyalis yo e menm pou ideyal demokratik k ap banbile nan monn jounen jodi a.

In this chapter, I first attempt to define the concept of epistemology according to three (3) traditions (English, French and African). Then I analyze Haitian epistemology according to African criteria for the theory of knowledge, emphasizing the role of Vodou and oral traditions, and then I examine the relationship between Haitian epistemology and empiricist and rationalist philosophy. At the same time, I question the influence of the Haitian revolution of 1791 in the development of certain paradigms such as Afrocentricity, anti-colonialism and an ideal of democracy. Given my findings regarding the essence of epistemology in the Haitian socio-cultural context, I conclude by considering the implications of these findings for the practice of psychology in Haiti, specifically vis-à-vis the [xliv] conceptualization of cognitive development according to Serge Madhère’s model of intelligence.
